Andover Wheeler completes The Midnight Sun Randonnee, a 1200km ride into the Arctic circle
In June Simon Healey completed the 'Midnight Sun Randonnee'. This is an annual 1200km ride from Umea in north east Sweden. The route goes north west across the Scandi mountains to Mo I Rana in Norway, then north into the Arctic circle before returning south east back to Umea.
These events are not a race but must be completed at an average speed of between 15kph and 30kph. This means 90 hours maximum, which is a reasonable challenge considering the clock doesn't stop when you eat and sleep.
Simon says, "I'd not been so far north before so it was quite an experience. The lack of darkness takes some getting used to and the weather threw up its own challenges at times. The scenery was spectacular; snow capped mountains, waterfalls, lakes, and large forests with reindeer and moose. It was a very well organised event with just 91 participants, so quite low key and friendly."
